Three Mistakes To Avoid With Your Security Alarm System

A security alarm system is meant to protect your home and family from intrusion, but if you don't take the right precautions, it can actually make you more vulnerable. Make sure you aren't making these mistakes with your security alarm system:

1. Not Having Enough Sensors With Your Security Alarm System

Many people think that when they get a security alarm system installed in their home, they only need one sensor on each of the doors and windows on the ground floor. This is not true. You should have sensors on every window and door in your home. If you have an enclosed garage, you should have a sensor at least on the door leading from the garage into your home. The reason for this is that if a thief breaks into your home through an upstairs window or another door, he will be able to get away with your belongings without tripping the alarm.

The same rules apply for motion detectors. You should place them in every room where you have large-ticket valuables like art, electronics, jewellery, etc. If you don't have motion detectors throughout your home, then a burglar could easily steal those items without being detected.

2. Placing Your Security Alarm System Where Everyone Can See It

If a potential intruder can see your security alarm system, they'll know they can break into your home without having to worry about getting caught. You should place your cctv security system in a location that's difficult to see (like the basement or an upstairs bedroom) or behind a plant or other furniture so that it's not obvious where it is. If you don't want to hide the obvious places where you would have put a security alarm system, another option is to use a fake security alarm system so that it looks like you do have one even though you don't. This will give intruders pause when they decide whether or not to break into your house.

3. Forgetting To Maintain Your Security Alarm System

Just as with any other aspect of your home, your security alarm system is something that needs a small amount of maintenance. A good first step is to make sure you're regularly changing the passwords for your alarm system and security cameras, so that you can be sure that only the people who need to have access do. You should also routinely check the cameras for dust buildup (or any other sign of dirt or damage), and if necessary, clean them using a soft cloth and water. Additionally, be sure to check the batteries in your alarms, as well as all other components of your system. If anything seems off, whether it's a low battery or a camera lens that needs cleaning, take care of it right away so you can be confident in the reliability of your home's defences.

Your cctv security system can be a deterrent against burglars and home intruders, but sometimes people are so excited about getting a new security system that they make mistakes when it comes time to installing it. Avoid the above mistakes and chat with an expert in home security for more tips.
